The Tarot Emperor card meaning in a nutshell:
You're up against real power, so yield or suffer the consequences.

Archetype:   Supreme ruler - irresistible power.

The Emperor Tarot Card
The Emperor, by imputation the spouse of the former. He is occasionally represented as wearing, in addition to his personal insignia, the stars or ribbons of some order of chivalry.  I mention this to shew that the cards are a medley of old and new emblems. Those who insist upon the evidence of the one may deal, if they can, with the other.  No effectual argument for the antiquity of a particular design can be drawn from the fact that it incorporates old material; but there is also none which can be based on sporadic novelties, the intervention of which may signify only the unintelligent hand of an editor or of a late draughtsman.

Inner Symbolism of the Tarot Emperor Card
He has a form of the Crux ansata for his sceptre and a globe in his left hand. He is a crowned monarch - commanding, stately, seated on a throne, the arms of which axe fronted by rams' heads. He is executive and realization, the power of this world, here clothed with the highest of its natural attributes. He is occasionally represented as seated on a cubic stone, which, however, confuses some of the issues. He is the virile power, to which the Empress responds, and in this sense is he who seeks to remove the Veil of Isis; yet she remains virgo intacta. It should be understood that this card and that of the Empress do not precisely represent the condition of married life, though this state is implied.  On the surface, as I have indicated, they stand for mundane royalty, uplifted on the seats of the mighty; but above this there is the suggestion of another presence. They signify also - and the male figure especially - the higher kingship, occupying the intellectual throne. Hereof is the lordship of thought rather than of the animal world.  Both personalities, after their own manner, are "full of strange experience," but theirs is not consciously the wisdom which draws from a higher world. The Emperor has been described as:   will in its embodied form, but this is only one of its applications, and as an expression of virtualities contained in the Absolute Being - but this is   fantasy.

Divinatory Meaning of the Tarot Emperor Card
Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction; also authority and will.

The Meaning and Symbology of The Emperor
A distinctly masculine card. The Emperor is represented as an ancient King, always bearded. Sitting on his throne, the rams shout ‘Aries’. His stone throne shows his time honoured, unwavering conservative values. The Empress is linked, and as their names show, they balance each other on the Male / Female divide. In his hand, he holds a stylised Ankh, an Egyptian symbol that has many meanings; mainly; “Life”, but also tying the card in more deeply with the Egyptian undertones that are present in the Tarot.
Symbolism in Emperor tarot card
The throne symbolises being in power. The Ram’s heads symbolise power, force, drive, energy, virility, protection, and fearlessness. The Ram is also a symbol for Aries which is the astrological sign for the Emperor. There are four ram’s heads carved on his stone chair, symbolising the stable energy of number 4. In his right hand, he holds an Ankh which is the Egyptian symbol for life. The Ankh and the Ram head are a symbol of the Egyptian God Amun-Ra which was worship in Karnak, which at the time was at it’s wealthiest. The Greek equivalent of Amun-Ra is Zeus. The Emperor is armored under his robe, symbolising a leader and a ruler. He is willing to defend and protect. In his left hand, he holds a sovereign coin, a symbol of Christian sovereignty on Earth. The Emperor’s long white hair and beard indicate that he has wisdom and experience, as well as a high social status. The orange background and his red clothing represent his passion and drive. The red is also symbolic for the planet Mars, the ruler of Aries. The river behind him could be the River Ulai from the book of Daniel where the Ram was attacked by the Goat. Ram’s in the bible is a symbol of the Fighting spirit as well as sacrifice. It is a sacrifice you can live with as Abraham chose to sacrifice a ram instead of his Son, Isaac.  The Tarot Emperor has real concrete power in abundance. He's no politician in need of allies and careful diplomacy. He's raw force. Anybody dealing with him should yield or else perish. On the Tarot Emperor card, he sits firmly on the throne, but in armor - he will stand up and strike at the moment he is challenged. He tolerates nothing but obedience.  We've had a number of emperors through history, several of them so majestic that 'majesty' is not enough to describe them. The first and probably still the most impressive one was Alexander in the 4th century BC, who conquered most of the known world at that time, when he was still a young man.  Below is a later painting of the legendary moment when Alexander cut the Gordian Knot, so complicated that the one to untie it was fit to rule the world. Alexander did so by swinging his sword - a warrior's solution.  The Emperor on this Tarot card is indeed a warrior ruler. He sits on a stone throne with his armor on, eager to do battle. The image on the card suggests another warrior ruler, the legendary King Arthur, but it might as well be Alexander, Julius Caesar, Napoleon, or Genghis Khan. It's the ruler with the force and the firmness to strike down any opposition.

The Emperor Tarot Card Description
In the Emperor tarot card, a stoic ruler figure can be seen on his throne, which is adorned with the heads of four rams, representing his astrological sign - Aries. In one hand, he carries a scepter, representing his reign and his right to rule, and in the other an orb, a symbol of the kingdom that he watches over. The long beard of the emperor represents his vast experience; over time he has learned much about what it takes to rule, to establish power, authority and complete order for the benefit of his people.
Behind him, the barren mountains shows his determination, his ambition for greater heights and his leadership capability. Contrast this with his complement, the Empress, whose flowing fields are filled with nurturing kindness. The Emperor instead rules with grit, strength and force.

Upright Emperor Meaning
It’s all about control when it comes to the Emperor, for this card means authority, regulation, organization and a fatherliness. The Emperor represents a strategic thinker who sets out plans that he must see through. He is a symbol of the masculine principle - the paternal figure in life that gives structure, creates rules and systems, and imparts knowledge. Where the Empress's desire for their kingdom is to create happiness, the emperor desires to foster honor and discipline. He guides with a firm hand, following the calling of the crown above all else. Though he is a ruler, he understands that to reign is also to serve - thus he acts rationally and according to what is for the greater good of the kingdom.

To see him in a reading presents a chance to grow in terms of the goals that you have set for yourself. It presents a successful future as long as you pursue your goals similar to the fashion that the Emperor does, methodically, and strategically.
When you see him in a reading, a possible interpretation is that you could be put in charge of something important. It could be a position at work or in any kind of organization or institution that desperately needs order and a clear decisive mind. You may be called to act in the place of the Emperor, using his wisdom to bring clarity to the project.
